Virgil Eugene Burns, age 90 , of Ligonier, IN passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at his residence in Ligonier, IN. He was born in Dwight, IL on October 27, 1927 the son of Randle E. And Virgie Delean (Payne) Burns. On October 14, 1978, he married Beatrice A. Cady in Topeka, IN. She has preceded Virgil in death on September 19, 2003.
Virgil has been a noble county resident for many years. After relocating with his family, he graduated from Cromwell High School in 1946. He served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1946 - 1947. Farming was his passion which he did before and after retirement. He worked for 33 years prior to retirement at Monsanto and Silgan. He was a member of St. Joseph Valley Rifle and Pistol Association in the late 1950s. He enjoyed competing and has several trophies and awards with both rifle and pistol shooting. A few years later, he tried golfing and that became his favorite pastime sport. He kept active as a member of Warsaw Moose and Ligonier American Legion as well as boot scootin’ and singing karaoke at those clubs. Virgil was a hardworking man that surely did enjoy life. He will be missed by so many people.
Virgil is survived by his children, one son, Stephen (Joan) Burns of Millersburg, IN; two daughters, Diana Burns of Ligonier, IN, Victoria Metz of Kingman, AZ; two step-sons, John “Jack” (Connie) Sawicki, Jerry Sawicki, all of Ligonier, IN; two stepdaughters, Dorothy (Shirl) Hall, Linda (“Mush”) Marshall of Ligonier, IN; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Burns of Kimmell, IN; and one sister, Imaboy Johnson of Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Burns; parents, Randle and Virgie Burns; son, George Burns; grandson, Jarrod Thomas; and siblings, Donald Burns, George Burns, James Burns, Lila Hewitt, Dorothy Burns, Anna Sattison, Corda Hunt, and Carol Davis.
A funeral service will be held in Virgil’s honor at 11AM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, IN 46767. Rev. Linda Hewitt will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier.
Family and friends will be received prior to the service from 10AM -11AM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 as well as from 3PM-5PM and 7PM-9PM on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Yeager Funeral Home.
