Bernis E. Wingard

Bernis E. Wingard, age 99, of Topeka, IN passed away on December 3, 2018 at Life Care Center in LaGrange, IN. She was born on February 14, 1919 in Topeka, IN the daughter of Perry and Jeanette (Oesch) Yoder. In August of 1946, Bernis married Harley Wingard; he preceded her in death in 1995.

Bernis is survived by her son, Tom Wingard of Fort Wayne, IN; a granddaughter, Theresa (Thomas) Ritter of Schifferstadt, Germany; and a brother, Willard Yoder of Emma, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Bernis worked at Peoples Mutual Telephone Company and United Telephone company for many years, and was the last living telephone operator from Topeka, IN. She is still remembered by many who can still hear her say, “number please”. Bernis also worked as a clerk at Topeka Drug store and was a faithful member of Topeka Mennonite Church and Topeka Women in Mission.

Family and friends will gather for a graveside service on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 12 noon at Eden Cemetery in Topeka, IN. Pastor Harold Gingrich will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee at donate.mcc.org .
