Monroe Hummel

Monroe Hummel, age 79, of Columbia City, Indiana passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at home as the result of natural causes. He was born on April 24, 1945 in Sturgis, Michigan, the son of Kenneth and Alice (Frey) Hummel.

Upon graduation from Lagrange High School, Monroe entered the United States Air Force. He served a year in Vietnam and also six years in the Indiana Air National Guard. Monroe married Jane Petersen in 1968 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Cromwell. They lived for 30 years in Fort Wayne, Indiana before retiring at the lake he loved.

Monroe retired from General Electric and BAE Systems. After retirement, he was employed by Whitley County Council on Aging. He had an amazing sense of humor and loved making chocolate chip pancakes and kettle corn for his grandkids. He loved his country and felt so privileged to have gone on the honor flight to Washington D.C. with his son in September of 2022.  He was also a member of Calvary Lutheran Church where he regularly volunteered with Jane serving monthly meals for the community.

Survivors include, his wife of 55 years, Jane Hummel; a daughter, Angela (John) Pettigrew of Churubusco; and a son, Mark (Kate) Hummel of Goshen; nine grandchildren, Sarah Jane, Lilly, Isaiah, Eli, Thea, and Peyton Pettigrew and Owen, Olivia, and Callen Hummel; a twin sister, Nina (Adrian) Shell of Niles, Michigan; and a sister, Catherine (Jim) Boren of Huntertown. Monroe was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Martha Burns; and a brother, Kenneth Hummel.

A funeral service will be held in Monroe’s honor at 11 am on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, IN 46767. Pastor Tom Monroe will officiate. Burial will follow at Sparta Cemetery in Kimmell, Indiana.

Family and friends will be received from 3-7 pm on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at Yeager Funeral Home. There will also be an hour of visitation prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Calvary Lutheran Church or Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.
