Kenneth Karl Michael of Ligonier, passed away Wednesday morning, February 12th at home with his wife by his side after a 14 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on April 3, 1950 to Charles Adam and Merrilyn “Janis” (Franks) Michael in Wolf Lake at Luckey Hospital.
He graduated in 1969—the first graduating class of Wawasee High School, Syracuse. From 1969-1975, he honorably served his country in the Army Reserves. On August 22, 1980 he married Marcia (Rink) Michael in the same home where they spent nearly 45 years together. She survives. Known for his strong work ethic, it’s no surprise that Ken started his first job at the age of 14 for Galloway’s Grocery in Syracuse. A job, that even in his final days, spoke so fondly of as well as the owners who treated him like a son. He retired in 2016 from Parker Hannifin, formally Syracuse Rubber, after 46 1/2 years of service. Never wanting any recognition of any kind, it was no surprise that he chose his final retirement day without telling his family or his coworkers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Benjamin (Molly) Michael of Kimmell, and David Stuckman of New Paris, and a daughter, Darcy (“Wild Bill”) Young of Kimmell; 7 grandchildren, Everett Michael, Audrey Stuckman, Brant Stuckman, Stephen Curtis, Michael Curtis, Kelly Curtis, and Johnny Curtis; 6 great-grandchildren plus 2 on the way; Brothers, Thomas (Marilyn) Michael of Syracuse, Jon Michael of Cromwell, 2 sisters, Rose (Mike) Yann of Fort Wayne, and Louann (Oakley) Vanover of Syracuse; along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Larry (Carolyn) Michael, and a son, Adam Daniel Michael.
Ken will be so fondly remembered for being the quiet servant. Always helping behind the scenes without ever being asked. He was a lover of animals and cared so very deeply for them. He was a 53 year member the West Noble American Legion. He loved his country and with his razor-sharp memory, was a great resource for all things local and national history. He loved classic cars and trucks, and cherished his 1951 Ford, a truck that belonged to his father and was restored by his brother, Jon. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will hold a visitation at Stone’s Hill Community Church, Ligonier on Sunday, February 16 th from 2-6pm with a memorial service following at 6pm, Pastor Joey Nelson officiating. Internment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to Stone’s Hill Community Church or Goshen Home Care and Hospice.
