Jose I. Vargas

Pastor Jose I. Vargas, age 91, of Ligonier, Indiana passed away on Monday, March 31, 2025, at home He was born on June 24, 1933 the son of Rafael and Rafaela (Barrron) Vargas in Malakoff, Texas. On December 6, 1959, he married Paula De Los Santos in Vallehermoso, Mexico. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2024 after 64 years of Marriage.

He is survived; four children, Arturo (Nellie) Vargas of Goshen, Ricardo (Sonia) Vargas of Goshen, Bernice (Benito Sr.) Landeros of Ligonier, and Samuel (Tina) Vargas of Summerville, South Carolina; thirteen grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was one of 18 children and was preceded in death by his parents and 17 siblings.

Pastor Jose was a devoted man of God and pastored Templo Elim Assemblies of God, in Weslaco, Texas for many years with his wife. He held a degree in Biblical Theology and served as a professor at a Bible College in Texas. He also served as a Treasurer for the government in Mexico in his younger years.

Pastor Jose also helped to establish a local Spanish Bible School when he moved to Ligonier. He loved art and loved to observe nature, always gathering life lessons and constructing sermons from God’s creation. He will always be remembered as very articulate, diligent, and an excellent steward of whatever God entrusted him with.

A funeral service will be held in Pastor Jose’s honor on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 at 2pm at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, IN 46767. Pastor Pedro Tamayo will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Yeager Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, and also from 1-2 pm on Wednesday prior to the service.
