Gary Wayne Bishop Sr., age 83, of Ligonier, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, just a few weeks shy of his 84th birthday.
He was born on September 28, 1941, in Kendallville, Indiana, to the late Robert Bishop and Katherine Smith (Iddings). On September 5, 1964, Gary married the love of his life, Audrey Mae Bishop, in Ligonier, Indiana. They shared many beautiful years together until her passing.
Gary proudly served his country, first in the United States Army, and later with the Indiana National Air Guard, from which he retired. He was a veteran of both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. His commitment to service extended well beyond the military, as he dedicated much of his life to serving the Ligonier community.
He served on the Ligonier Board of Zoning Appeals, the Planning Commission, and the City Council, before being elected Mayor of Ligonier, a position he held for two terms. In addition, he served on the Ligonier Police Department and volunteered with the Ligonier Fire Department. Gary was a proud member of American Legion Post #243 and the Masonic Lodge. He also worked for over 20 years at Challenge Door Company before retiring.
Gary enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including playing golf, bingo, Yahtzee, and rummy. He especially cherished time spent with his Cats; Princess, Brooke, Tigger, and Angel.
He is survived by his three children: Tammy (David) Waliczek of North Webster, Rena (Tom) Fish of North Webster, and Gary (Susan) Bishop Jr. of Fort Wayne; He is also survived by his sisters, Jean Perkins and Louise (Mike) Rodman.
Gary was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Audrey; his son, Lauren Bishop; his brother, Larry Bishop; and his parents.
Gary lived a life marked by service, laughter, and love for his family, friends, and country. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 2 pm, at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway S., Ligonier, IN 46767. Friends may visit with the family for 4 hours prior to the service, beginning at 10 am. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Noble County, 1305 Sherman St., Kendallville, IN 46755 or the American Legion Post #243 at 100 S Main Street, Ligonier, IN 46767.
