LIGONIER — Alvin “Jack” J. Schlemmer, 82, of Ligonier, IN, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017, at 7:15p.m. at his home surrounded by family in Ligonier. He was born on January 26, 1935, to Carl R. and Nellie G. (Barkley) in Noble County, IN. On January 7, 1956, Jack married Maria Elena Jordan in Douglas, AZ; she survives.
Jack had a lot of talent along with numerous skills. Prior to self-employment as a woodworker, he worked for many years with Paul Becker & Sons as an electrician and plumber. He went on to work in Goshen, IN for Johnson Controls in the maintenance department. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post 243 in Ligonier. The West Noble School Corporation was fortunate to have him sit on their board for many years. The visitors center in Ligonier was happy to have him be a part of their team. Jack was a true pillar in the Ligonier community and played an active role as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Patrick’s Church in Ligonier. Many behind the scenes activities were how Jack spent his time creating memories. Whether you needed a tool to borrow, a piece of furniture refinished, or electrical work completed, Jack was always present to lend a helping hand, a true “Jack” of all trades. He will be missed by so many.
Surviving are his five sons, Michael (Susan Jackson) Schlemmer, Robert (Gloria) Schlemmer, Charles (Cynthia) Schlemmer, Adam Schlemmer, and Joel (Margie) Schlemmer. Grandchildren; Annie (Caleb) Tennis, Zachary Schlemmer, Elizabeth Schlemmer, Tyler (Aimee) Dahl-Schlemmer, Jackson (Carly) Schlemmer, Caitlin Schlemmer, Lincoln Schlemmer, Amillia Schlemmer, and Jordan Schlemmer. Two Great-Grandchildren; Isaac and Zoe Tennis, and one sister; Lila Barkley.
Mr. Schlemmer was preceded in death by his parents; brother’s, Richard D. and Ted W. Schlemmer and sister’s, Carolyn Duesler, Nina Case, Lois Renner, and Esther Fay Fisel
A funeral service will be held in Mr. Schlemmer’s honor on Saturday, July15, 2017, at 11a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 300 Ravine Park Dr. Ligonier, IN, 46767. Father Wilson Corzo and Deacon Stan Lemieux will officiate. Private burial will take place at a later date in Oak Park Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 2p.m. to 7p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Yeager Funeral Home – 1589 Lincolnway South Ligonier, IN 46767 as well as on Saturday morning, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Church prior to the service.
