Elbert Luther Hagerman, age 92, of Ligonier passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Parkview Noble Hospital. He was born December 15, 1922 the son of Shade and Mary Jane (Vance) Hagerman. On August 1, 1946 he married Edith Hicks.
He is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Edith Hagerman of Ligonier; 9 children, Elbert Noah (Ethel) Hagerman of Angola, IN, Philip J. (Reva) Hagerman of Paynesville, WV, Enoch (Delois) Hagerman of Ligonier, IN, Charles (Mary June) Hagerman of Waterloo, IN, Beulah (Javier) Garcia of Ligonier, IN, Madelene (Larry) Slone of Ligonier, Jenedith (Willie) Huff of Ligonier, IN, Luther L. (Sherry) Hagerman of Ocala, FL, and Joe (Ellen) Hagerman of Ligonier, IN; 107 grandchildren and great grandchildren; and 4 sisters, Jenny Honaker of Statesville, NC, Sitha Louise Stuart of Ligonier, IN, Mary Thornsbury of Virginia, and Shirley Terry of Standard, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lee Huffard Hagerman & Riley Edward Hagerman; a sister, Cora Stacy; and two grandchildren, Angela Lynn Hagerman and Larry Raven Slone.
Elbert served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII from 1942-1946. Following the war he returned home and married his sweetheart. They shared over 68 years of marriage and raised a large and wonderful family. He could name all his grandchildren’s names and always made sure they each had a Christmas present from mamaw & papaw. He retired from the Coal Mines after 34 years of service and later retired again from Monsanto Plastics in Ligonier. He was a member United Mine Workers Association and a life member of The VFW in Ligonier. He also served as a Deacon and was a member at Mount Olive Old Regular Baptist Church. Elbert will always be loved, missed and remembered well.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 11 AM at Mount Olive Old Regular Baptist Church, 3635 S 200 E; Valentine, IN. The service will be led by his son, Pastor Elbert Hagerman. Elder William Holbrook, Elder Lowell Mullins, and Elder Dennis Elkins will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dennis Hagerman, David Slone, Scotty Huff, Steven Hagerman, Jason Hagerman, Jeremy Hagerman, Justin Hagerman, and Joey Hathcock.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 PM on Monday January 26, 2014 at Yeager Funeral Home; 1589 Lincolnway South; Ligonier, IN. A church service will begin at 6PM at the funeral home following the visitation.
Following the service at the funeral home on Monday evening, Elbert will be taken to the Mount Olive Old Regular Baptist Church. An old fashioned wake will then be held starting Monday night and continuing all day Tuesday and until the time of the 11AM funeral service on Wednesday. Family and friends are welcome anytime during the wake at the church. Memorial contributions may be directed to the church.
