Mildred L. Smith

TOPEKA, Ind. — Mildred L. Smith, departed this life Thursday at the age of 98 and one half years.

She was the daughter of John O. and Bertha A. (Jones) Greenawalt. She was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Topeka.

Feb. 3, 1931, she was united in marriage with Glen W. Smith, who departed this life in 2006. To this union was born a daughter Marlene.

Surviving are a daughter, Marlene (Clarence) Campbell; three grandchildren, Brent (Rita) Snyder, Jeanne (Mike) Becker, and Denise Primeaux; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Her parents, along with two sisters, Madeline Hunter and Lois Ruch; one great grandson and one great-great grandson preceded her to eternity.

She lived in the same home in Topeka for over 69 years. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1927 and went on to earn a degree from Fort Wayne International Business College. She was a life member of Topeka Baptist Church. She worked as a Topeka telephone operator and as a Farmers State Bank teller. She also worked in the LaGrange County treasurer’s office and the LaGrance County department of welfare.

The funeral service will take place Monday at 10 a.m. at Topeka Baptist Church with Pastors Burton Smith and Gene Parker officiating.

Calling hours are Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the church.

Entombment will be in Eden Cemetery, Topeka.

Memorials may be directed to the Topeka Historical Society.
