Richard Frederick Sack

February 10, 1921 — July 23, 2011

Richard Frederick Sack, 90, was born February 10, 1921 in Ligonier, IN and passed away peacefully July 23, 2011 in Plano, TX with family members at his bedside.


He is survived by his beloved wife, Lurene S. Sack, his daughter, Peggy Sue Malloy and son-in-law Benjamin Malloy of Dallas, TX, and his grandchildren, Justin Edgar Malloy and Rachel Lauren Malloy of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Yetta Stage Olsen of Ligonier, IN and her children Suetta Clermont, Richard Stage and Donna Jean Burnside, his brother-in law, Allen Sickafoose and wife Patricia and children, Munro Sickafoose, Kristen Loxley and Martin Sickafoose, and his sister-in-law Betty Sickafoose and her children, Munro Sickafoose, Keith Sickafoose, II, Nancy Wszalek and Elizabeth Wensel.

Richard was a Mason and proud veteran of WWII. For his service, he was awarded the European, African and Middle East Theater Medal, 7 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct ribbon and a Distinguished Unit citation. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre, a very distinguished French military decoration and most recently, earlier this year, the French Legion of Honor medal, awarded by the French government for his service in the Southern invasion and liberation of France.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Sack and Ruth Sack Shults, his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Bowen, his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Epert and his brothers-in-law Harold Stage, and Colonel Keith Sickafoose.

Richard was dearly loved by his family and his wise presence will be missed by all.

A funeral service in Richard’s honor will be held on Thursday, July 28, at 2 PM at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South; Ligonier, IN 46767 with Pastor Stanley Wilson officiating. Friends may call from 12-2 PM prior to the funeral service. Burial will take place at Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier where full military honors will be conducted. Memorial contributions may be directed to Society of the Third Infantry Division, U.S. Army, Outpost 35.
